I created the “Chat Group” series to investigate a typical scenario in which two languages are used interchangeably within the daily conversations of an immigrant family. The bilingual text messages that appear in the family’s group chat are scrambled, engraved, and layered in this sculptural piece. The texts in two languages are recognizable but not easily decipherable. This series explores how culture is negotiated through language integration in the “in-betweenness.”
